Propose total ban on all catches of European eel in Norway
The Norwegian Director General of Fisheries proposes a ban on all catches for commercial and leisure purposes of European eel in Norway effective from 2010.
The Director General of Fisheries, Mrs. Liv Holmefjord, argues that Norway should strongly encourage the European Union to strengthen conservation measures for European eel in member states.
The International Council for Exploration of the Seas (ICES) recommends that the fishing mortality for European eel should be reduced as much as possible - as soon as possible.
Critically endangered
European eel is categorized as Critically Endangered (CR) by the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre. Moreover, the European eel is listed on CITES List II, which implies that a special permit is required for exportation of eel.
Mrs. Holmefjord proposes that all relevant Norwegian authorities should cooperate with a view to establish a general recovery plan for European eel in Norway, both in salt water and fresh water. Furthermore, she proposes that the ban should be accompanied by stronger efforts on monitoring and scientific research on European eel.
The Director Generals proposal is addressed to the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and Costal Affairs.
